What Cured my Pregnancy Nausea

I refuse to call it "Morning Sickness". There was nothing "morning" about it....it lasted all day for me.

Like most mommies, I had horrible nausea starting at 5 1/2 weeks of pregnancy. I can't say it was worse just because I pregnant with two babies, but I will say it was BAD! Although I didn't vomit much at all, the extreme nausea feeling was with me wherever I went, whatever I ate, and whatever medical, natural or homeopathic remedy I took. Seabands, ginger drops, saltine crackers, gingerale, vitamin B6, vitamin B6 with Unisom, Zofran...some of these helped more than others, but never caused complete relief.

I waited impatiently for the magical 12th week of pregnancy to come so that I could be cured!

Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed when I finally did hit week 12 and found myself to be, in fact, still very nauseous.

Something wonderful happened, however, when a friend of mine sent me an article about magnesium and how it helps with nausea and other symptoms during pregnancy. I decided to try taking a magnesium supplement (I chose Magnesium Serene. It's a powder form of magnesium citrate that is mixed with hot water to form a tea-like drink.) I noticed that after taking it for just 3 days, that my nausea had completely gone away! To this day, if I go more than a week without taking a dose of magnesium, all my nausea symptoms start to come back. But all it takes is one dose, and I start feeling better again.

I will say that for a while I would still randomly vomit for no reason, even with the magnesium, and for that reason I stayed on 1/2 tablet of zofran...but the horrible unrelenting nausea (which I found to be much worse than vomiting) was completely cured by the magnesium.

Another benefit I found with the magnesium is that it stabilized my blood sugar, so that I didn't get faint-feeling if I didn't eat as soon as I got hungry.

Here's a link to the article about magnesium:

The article suggests using an oil on the skin, but I don't think that it is the most effective way to get magnesium into your body. I found that taking it orally worked better for me.

As for the Magnesium Serene, it can be found on Amazon and in most health food stores. A 9 ounce bottle lasts me about 2 months. It comes in a few different flavors. I like the berry the best.

Foods that are rich in magnesium include:
spinach
squash and pumpkin seeds
soy beans
brown rice
avocados
figs
and yes, dark chocolate!
